Minecraft released a trailer today for their new mobile game that uses AR technologyMinecraft Earth.

Minecraft World

When it comes to details, we don’t know what the game will be entirely, but we do have some information.

Does it feel like Minecraft?

“Everywhere you go, you see Minecraft. And everywhere you go, you can play Minecraft,” executive producer Jesse Merriam said to TechCrunch.

A TechCrunch writer was able to play a demo of the game. According to the writer, the world of Minecraft Earth behaves the same as in the normal game.

Water and lava flow the same. Building blocks move and stack as they should. Enemies are just as tenacious as they are in the main game.

You are able to build to your heart’s content and create a loving home for your family of chickens and pigs.

AR use

To play the game, you need to use the AR tech on your phone to see the world of Minecraft.

“If you want to play Minecraft Earth without AR, you have to turn it off,” said game director Torfi Olafsson.

If you ever played Pokémon GO!, you are probably familiar with the AR tech and how it is used in the game.

In that game, you do NOT need to use AR technology, and only use it to enhance the experience, like when you’re capturing a Pokémon.

Adventures within reason

Minecraft adventure

Just like how Pokémon typically don’t spawn on the highway in Pokémon GO, you won’t be able to go on adventures in inappropriate or dangerous areas.

Locations like highways and residential areas will be off-limits for adventures. Although, collectibles might pop up there.

Other details

  • Skins will be available.
  • There isn’t any word on purchasable content yet, but it might come in the future.
  • New regions will gradually roll out, but most of everything will be available at launch.
  • Skins can transfer over from your Minecraft account.
  • Some adventures will have age warnings for younger users.

Minecraft Earth will undoubtedly make a big splash upon release, and we can’t wait to dive right in.
